In January 2024, the OECD minimum tax was introduced in Switzerland. This means that domestic companies with revenues of over 750 million euros are taxed at a minimum of 15%. To keep Switzerland an attractive business location, the Canton of Basel-Stadt has now decided on a location development package. The additional tax revenue is to benefit innovation, research, society, and the environment. Companies based here can apply for contributions that cover, among other things, personnel costs and research infrastructure or can be used to reduce CO₂ emissions. Additional parental leave is also intended to promote gender equality. Local universities can also apply for innovative projects with start-ups and SMEs in the life sciences sector.

The clear approval shows that the population is aware of the importance of these companies. The strong vote underlines the support for the region’s economic and technological development and highlights the significance of companies that are deeply involved in research and innovation.

"The clear 'yes' is an important signal from the population to the economy that innovation should continue to be invested in here in the Basel region. People know how important research and innovation are for a successful location – but also directly for individuals. We all benefit from the development of new medicines or therapies. The two new funds are also an opportunity for SMEs and start-ups, which can also benefit from financial support and are an important part of the life sciences cluster in our region," says Luca Urgese, FDP, member of the cantonal parliament in Basel-Stadt.
